Probably the most unattractive thing about road bikers, is their shorts.
I used to look at bikers and think “I will never be caught wearing one of those pants”.
Those pants are essential for any bike rider. They have padded gel on the inside which creates a cushion for your behind and private parts while riding.
These tend to be, shorts (obvi), extremely tight and form fitting.
... and since the gel piece is mostly toward the back, you tend to look as if you have extra fat between your legs.
Definitely not the most attractive piece of clothing.
I often struggle with my weight and the way I look in clothes and specifically workout clothes. For a long time after I started biking, I would wear an additional pair of shorts above the real tight ones, or when I went running I would buy loose fitting pants rather than the runner’s pants.
One day recently, I was running near my home and it was very hot outside and there was a man who probably weighed close to 300 lbs. He was running shirtless and his belly was flopping, but what I noticed most, was that he had an incredible huge grin on his face. He was HAPPY!
You could just tell that this was a guy on a mission, a guy who probably a few months ago couldn’t even walk for five minutes without being out of breath and here he was running shirtless and smiling.
In psychology, there is a term called the Foot in the Door Phenomenon. This idea has been applied to many areas in life, but the basic concept is that it’s easier to start small and once there is a small commitment to something, it is easier to then continue and to commit to larger things.
It’s always harder to start a task, but once started, it is a little easier to continue it.
Don’t let the fear of how you look be the thing to prevent you from starting a physical activity, whether you are worried about how you look in the clothing or the way you run, bike or swim. It doesn’t matter, what matters is that you get out and do it.
Choose an activity that you always wanted to try and don’t fuss about the way you look or what the people looking at you are saying.
Look inside and see that you are opening the door to many great opportunities.
