Did you know that there’s life outside of the gym?
No, I’m not insinuating that there is more to life than working out.
Working out is only second to
• hitting the lottery,
• child-birth (unless it’s your second or third child) or
• God letting you into heaven despite your assorted red flags…
but I digress.
When I say that there is life outside of the gym I am referring to the many ways fitness and mental health can be promoted by exercising outside of the 4 walls that we consider our second home.
Often times, people “freeze” their memberships during the summer months.
I consider this a mistake for a few reasons.
One is the obvious. Summer is HOT.
I’d rather be inside using up someone’s air-conditioned facilities instead of pounding out laps on a track.
But fall... fall is perfect.
There is almost no activity that cannot be done outdoors in the fall.
There’s hiking, running and the occasional evening walk with the loved one to name a few. The great outdoors can be utilized in so many ways.
Here’s an idea: Take a kettle ball to your nearest 24hr Walmart after 9pm and see how much work you can get done. Store parking lots are great for runs or line drills. They’re also well lit.
There are also the obvious: parks!
Fall paints a beautiful canvas as you walk through a park enjoying the trees and counting the many different colors of the leaves.
Take this time to gather your thoughts.
Embrace those feelings that you’ve held off due to other obligations. Use this time to regroup. There’s just something about being in the midst of Mother Nature’s glory.
There is no roof outside of the gym and absolutely no ceiling on how high you can take your outdoor fitness.
Live a little.
It’s a beautiful life... outside of the gym.
