The Capsule Wardrobe Project - Part One

I love clothes – perhaps too much because my closet is bursting at the seams.

It only recently occurred to me that my clothing collection has gotten out of control and is causing me a large amount of stress.

My bedroom is a ridiculous mess with clothes and laundry everywhere.

Who can function in this sort of chaos?

A friend of mine recently decided to try out a new trend called The Capsule Wardrobe, where you only have about 24 items of clothing in your entire wardrobe that easily mix and match for all potential clothing occasions.

When I saw her selling off all of her clothes on Instagram I thought – this chick is crazy!

But last night standing amidst the piles of laundry in front of my closet, I thought maybe she was on to something:

Why do I need all these clothes?

I honestly have at least four loads of laundry on my bedroom floor right now and a closet still completely full of clothes.

• What am I hanging on to?

I started thinking about the emotional ties I have with some pieces of clothing and the thought of parting with them made me sad.

But why?

I have great memories to hold on to...

Why do I need the physical item in my closet when I never wear it anymore?

Of all the clothes I have in my closet, I probably wear the same 10 outfits over and over again!

I have decided, after nearly bringing myself to tears last night, to let go of all of the loads – of laundry and stress and baggage.

It can’t be healthy and I think shaking things up is just what I need right now!

This weekend I am going to go through my ENTIRE wardrobe and let go of the physical and emotional baggage my closet currently holds.

I am honestly terrified. But also a little excited!

Sometimes I dig through hundreds of pieces of clothing and still feel like I have nothing to wear – maybe if I have fewer choices and all of the choices are my favorite things, it won’t be so hard to choose!

I am hoping to gain a little perspective from this project and get myself to a happier place.

In what little free time I have, I should be enjoying myself instead of washing a million loads of laundry or spending hours trying to find something to wear.

I am ready to get down and dirty in my closet and get rid of the excess that I don’t wear! I think this whole project will be super liberating!

• Do you think I’m insane?

• Would you ever try out a Capsule Wardrobe and go super minimal with your clothing options?

Stay tuned for Part 2 of the Capsule Wardrobe Project to find out how the closet purge goes and how I feel about life without excess! Perhaps it'll look like this:
