5 Drinks Guaranteed to Give You a Hangover

No one wants to be that guy: Passed out before midnight on New Year’s Eve covered in Sharpies or anything else in close proximity.

Or worse, you make it to midnight and cruise on auto-pilot the whole night only to find out the next day that you were a complete fool yelling and slurring your words and acting like a sloppy mess.

Or, maybe you've already passed this amateur stage in your life.

But the dreaded New Year’s Day hangover is a problem that can be shared by all three scenarios, even though it doesn't have to be.

Sure, there are hundreds of articles trying to shed light on ways to avoid a hangover—drink a glass of water for every alcoholic drink you consume, avoid dark liquors, and try not to drink on an empty stomach—but we've all heard these and still seem to suffer year after year.

Since you’re probably going to avoid that advice anyway, we’ve decided to highlight drinks that are guaranteed to give you a hangover thanks to their high alcohol and congener (chemical toxins produced during the fermentation process, according to The Daily Beast) content.

    1. Red Bull + Vodka (Or any other energy drink + alcohol mix)
Alcohol is already going to dehydrate you. Add in an energy drink and your dehydration levels are sure to soar. Mix that with a full night of dancing and sweating, you’re pretty much begging for a hangover. Skip this mix at all costs. Even if you’re feeling tired or sluggish.

    2. Diet Soda + Vodka/Rum/Tequila/Etc.

As previously mentioned in this post, drinking diet sodas in combination with alcohol leads to you getting drunk faster. Sure, if you’re still in college that may sound like fun but the next day you’re bound to hear less than ideal stories and feel completely shitty.

      3. High Sugar Drinks

While the image of a Margarita or a frozen Daiquiri may come to mind, many drinks have just as much sugar and will leave you feeling just as miserable. Many times, the mixes used to make these drinks are just downright cheap and filled with unnecessary chemicals. Since you’re already filling your body with toxins (via the alcohol) you’re only building on the problem with these way too sweet mixins.
      The top ones to avoid:
        • Long Island Iced Tea- this is a total no-brainer here since it contains 4 different alcohols and tons of mix-ins
        • Manhattan
        • Tequila Sunrise
        • White Russian
        • Rusty Nail
        • Sex on the Beach
        • Whisky Sour
        • Old Fashioned
      4. Shots, Especially Fireball

Just like the mixed drinks above, you’re bound to run into some trouble taking sugar filled shots. While Fireball is still another popular favorite for some, it’s so damn bad for you. After all, Europeans recalled and banned the sale of our anti-freeze American version, so why should you settle for that crap?

      • 5. The Bubbly

      • According to WikiHow, these drinks literally go straight to your head. Think pounding headache the next day. No thank you! Have a sip for good luck but don’t plan on drinking this for your entire night.

        What Can You Drink?

        Vodka

At this point you’re probably thinking: what a buzz kill! But, there are still ways to have fun. Of course moderation is key here as these drinks can still give you a hangover but maybe not that feel like I’m dying and I swear I’ll never drink again kind.

It’s also important not to be cheap here as we all know that the cheap stuff is bound to come back and bite ya!

      • Clear drinks (vodka, gin, tequila—easy on this one tiger) on the rocks or mixed with fresh fruit. The rocks, or ice, can help add water to your night while the fruits can help replace vitamins that are depleted from the alcohol. According to Details, it may also be a good idea to pop a multivitamin before your all night drinking affair. These types of drinks to require more control as they are still pretty strong.

      • Dry red wines

      • Craft beers. These tend to have less GMOs and questionable ingredients than their Americana counterparts (Think: MSG which makes you super munchy) and can fill you up quicker leading to less drinking—hopefully.

Before you go ruining the first day of your New Year, avoid these drinks and thank us later.
