Sweat for a Cause: 5 Ways to Give Back While You Workout

You’re too tired for that last mile? That’s fine, the children in Guatemala probably don’t need an education anyway. You’re not being selfish or anything. I’m totally kidding... kinda. We all know the benefits of working out and staying healthy for ourselves, but did you realize you can benefit others while you get your sweat on?

Most of the time, charities don’t cross our minds until the holidays roll around. November hits and suddenly we turn into Mother Theresa donating canned goods, bagging up slightly worn clothes and giving an extra dollar here and there. Let’s be honest, these little things make us feel awesome! You’re giving back to the community and that just makes you the best person ever. Wouldn’t it be nice to feel that way all the time?

Working out to benefit someone besides yourself is a new concept, but it’s an incredible one that we should all give a try. And we're not talking about the money that's donated from your 5K entrance fee either. We take it a step further here.

So next time you lace up your running shoes, try one of these ways to give back a little bit – some won’t even cost you a dime!

1.  Charity Miles

Turn on the app and just start running! For every mile you run, walk or bike ride, the app donates to charities! On top of that, for every mile you record on foot, they donate 25 cents, and for every mile on bike, they donate 10 cents. You get to pick from over 20 causes you'd like your workout to go towards and the app tracks how far you’ve gone and donates on your behalf!

2. Budge

Bring out a little friendly (or not so friendly) competition between family and friends. Make a bet where the loser pays an agreed amount to a worthy cause. You can’t be that mad if you’re the loser here. Although make sure this doesn’t backfire and you’re not eating that cookie for “the sake of charity” – nice try though.

3. Every Move

This app will track your movement and connect you to friends with similar goals. As you hit different fitness goals, you earn points, which you can redeem rewards with, including donating to a charity! This might make you the odd ball in the office when you take the long way to the conference room to hit your daily step goals, but it's definitely worth it.

4. Fitness Classes

SoulCycle, Cyc, The Movement, Kix & Spinz and Studio 360 are all fitness studios that give back. From spin to yoga to HIIT, each studio uniquely gives individuals the opportunity to feel good as they sweat. Some studios let you hand pick which charity you’d like your efforts to go towards, while others will let members nominate a charity each month.

5. She’s the First

When it comes to She's the First, you'll set up a donation page for a race and distance of your choice then ask family and friends to donate. This worthy cause raises money and pays for the K-12 education for young girls in under developed countries. Need to feel even better? You can not only see the girls you’re impacting, but even become pen pals with them!

Giving back can be as easy as turning on an app during your next run or as ambitious as setting up a donation page and asking family and friends for financial support. Whatever route you choose, give back, sweat and have fun!
