To build the body of our dreams we need to dedicate one day a week to workout one muscle group for chiseled perfection. This is what the fitness pros and gym buffs tell us. We do our best to dedicate that amount of time but spending 1-2 hours in the gym six days a week just isn’t practical. There is thing called “life” that just seems to creep up and get in the way of this grueling schedule. Besides, we need to leave room for happy hours with friends and Netflix.
High-priority social engagements aside, there has to be a more efficient way to work out our entire body, lose fat, build muscle and get on with life. And that is why total-body workouts are the secret weapons for fat loss that have eluded us for far too long.
Total-body workouts involve complex movements and more than one major muscle group. These types of movements elevate heart rate and challenge muscles to work anaerobically, or without oxygen, which means burning more calories in less time. Exercises like squats and deadlifts recruit the glutes, core and lower back to do most of the work. Squat jumps and burpees gives us even more of a fat-burning boost because the HIIT nature of these exercises activate the “after burn” principle (EPOC) which boosts our metabolism for hours after our workout.
Who wants to workout 6 times a week, hitting one muscle group per workout? Bo-ring. Ain’t nobody got time for that! Take burpees for example. Yes, they can be torture but no one gets bored doing burpees and they are challenging to who is doing them. And rightly so. This exercise engages legs, lower abs, core, arms and upper body. Your whole body is on fire. Now throw in forearms, glutes and back for exercises like deadlifts or any variation thereof and you have total body bonanza.
Let’s face it, we live in an instant-gratification society. We want our perky butt and we want it now. We want tank top arms all year ‘round but we don’t want to stand around doing mundane curls when we can be doing pull-ups or chin-ups and simultaneously carving out a sexy back. Meow!
If power and strength are your goals, full-body movements will allow you to exert the most total-body effort. It’s also the best way to a superhero-esque bod.
