Relationship Boredom: A Blessing in Disguise?

  • Relationships are generally characterized by several distinct stages: the honeymoon stage and then the “wave.”
  • The wave phase should only last a couple of weeks, after which both parties would have a clearer sense if the person they are with is truly the right one.
  • True boredom and red flags: If the wave period continues for too long, the boredom and unhappiness may become a permanent factor in the relationship. It is important to look into potential red flags and deal breakers but also not to take your partner and relationship for granted and make an effort to overcome boredom.

Relationships take work, and a short period of boredom following the honeymoon period is normal because the thrill of the “chase” is over. The honeymoon period is the first stage of a relationship. It is described as a period of blissful harmony and goodwill. It is characterised by a powerful biological experience called “falling in love” and ruled by adrenaline.

After the honeymoon period usually comes the “Ride the Wave” period, where sudden questioning of the relationship and boredom may appear. The “chase” and the adrenaline disappear and people start having second thoughts and questioning if they are in the right relationship. However, if this period continues for too long afterwards and there is no real effort input by both parties, it may be time to reassess the relationship. Relationship boredom, in this way, can be a good thing in that it requires you to ask yourself deep questions about whether you are both getting what you want out of your partnership.\
