How to Break Up Without Being a Jerk

  • Breakups happen to relationships that aren’t great in the first place, and accepting this is the first step to having “the talk.”
  • Avoid blaming or insulting, and instead frame the talk on what isn’t working out for you and your goals, while acknowledging the areas of the relationship that were positive for you.
  • Closure is hard to get so instead focus on making it a clean break; no answering calls, texting or social media stalking, you wouldn’t want to give false hope.
  • Be open and honest about your feelings, and understand you are going to be lonely, scared, and angry afterwards; the best thing for you and your soon-to-be-ex is to not be completely destroyed due to a bitter breakup.

If you are at the stage of figuring out how to break-up, you clearly already know things are no longer at a positive point between you and your S/O. Approaching this in a civil way will help the other person avoid more pain and trauma than is necessary. Remember to stay on the high road, and discuss points that made both of your lives happier because of the relationship, as well as things that weren’t working. Avoiding blame and namecalling is very important. Once you have had the talk, you must move on; staying in limbo can cause a serious amount of unneeded stress and pain. Remember to be honest, and open, and things will start to move to a better place for both of you. Good luck!
