The Most Misguided Way to Encourage Gym-Going Women to Work Out



WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Body shaming really isn’t okay in any environment and may be counterproductive (and even triggering for some) in a fitness class.

Have you ever been motivated by negative reinforcement? Maybe it works for you, but it seems to us like too many women fall victim to body shaming comments made by instructors or trainers in the spirit of fitness.

It all depends on the fitness instructor’s style, but we think if you’re being told you need to work out to make sure “he puts a ring on it” or so you can “earn” your brunch… they’re doing it wrong. Not to mention, being reminded how many calories are in a pound or similar “motivational” mantras can be extremely triggering for anyone who’s ever suffered from an eating disorder. A bit irresponsible of any fitness professional, to say the least.

Ladies, if you’re ever uncomfortable with the type of training you’re receiving—whether it’s in a group fitness class or one-on-one with a personal trainer—speak up or walk out. There’s no shame in either!
