Top 8 Ways to Turn Hard Work Into Play

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Start thinking of your work-outs as play. It will completely change your attitude and focus.

When I was a kid, I always looked forward to summer because I loved to play outside! As an adult, we forget the word play and start calling things like running around, “work”. One thing we should do is, stop thinking of our work-outs as work. Start thinking of your work-outs as play. It will completely changed your attitude and focus. Before, I would constantly watch the clock, counting the minutes until my 30-minute run was up, or counting down my reps with little to no enthusiasm. It was time to switch it up!!

Lately, I have been taking my dog out in the yard and consciously playing with her. I throw her ball and chase her to it and I barely realize the time passing or the work I’m putting in. Or I race my husband in the pool to see who can swim a lap faster! I maintain that he is only beating me at this challenge because he is over a foot taller than me – which is obviously cheating -but the important thing is that we are having a blast and are working hard without noticing. Having fun is an excellent distraction!

Here are just a few great ideas so you can turn hard work into play this summer:

  • Grab some friends and have a rousing game of freeze tag – consider the freeze your rest period!
  • Blow up some balloons and see how long you can keep it them the air – your arms will give up before the balloon does!
  • Escape the heat in the pool and see who has the best cannonball!
  • Have an old fashioned foot-race! Bonus points if you play this game at the beach!
  • See how many minutes or how far you can skip or jump rope! Your legs will remind you that you worked hard the next morning!
  • Play a sport! Any sport! Kickball! Baseball! Frisbee! Basketball! Good workout & bragging rights!
  • See how long you can stand on your hands! Now try and beat your best time!
  • Race an elevator to the top floor of a building! This is especially gratifying when you win!
Life is too short to not have fun, and being active is an important piece of a healthy lifestyle – why not combine the two? Get outside this summer and play!
