Protein shakes are great for refueling after a workout but a little lackluster in the deliciousness department. Drinking the same shake day in and day out gets monotonous.
Sure, you can purchase tubs of whey in various flavors, but that’s a pricey way to get some variety. And what are you going to do with that two-pound bucket of Banana Cream that you had to try but now absolutely detest?
Good news! Your protein shakes don’t have to be boring. There are plenty of inexpensive, versatile ways to punch up your protein without adding significant calories or otherwise messing with your macros.
Start with a plain vanilla or chocolate protein powder and go from there. Like milkshakes? Try blending your shake with ice for a thicker, creamier texture.
Vary the liquid you use to make your shake. If you typically use just water, try half water and half milk. Or mix your protein into plain or flavored rice, coconut, or almond milk.
These add a lot of flavor without adding calories. There are myriad flavor extracts to choose from. Opt for a pure (as opposed to artificial) extract whenever possible, and add a drop at a time, tasting as you go. You can find classic flavors like orange, lemon, and coconut at the grocery store. When you’ve worked your way through those, check out online shops or specialty baking supply stores for more exotic flavorings.
Sprinkle some ground cinnamon, ginger, clove, allspice, and/ or cayenne into your protein shake. For best results, purchase fresh spices and grind them yourself, in a dedicated grinder, in small batches. Store your spices in a cool, dark place (not in a spice rack over the stove) and replace your stock every 9 to 12 months.
